Mobile equipment operators at Hefler Forest Products Limited are responsible to operate, monitor and control each specific piece of equipment to handle materials for general operations, production, and incoming and outgoing shipments or deliveries. Operators also routinely must perform manual labour duties required to keep processes flowing through the entire operation.

Forklift Operator, Loader Operator, Porter Operator, Boom Truck Operator, Truck Operator, Driver

Operator’s Duties

An operator’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to;

  • Inspection, hazard assessment, start-up and operation of the mobile equipment.
  • Operation and full working knowledge of the controls for the equipment being operated.
  • Communications skills that will allow the operator to be an effective materials team member working within the sales and production departments.
  • Visually calculate size, condition, quality and other characteristics of products being lifted or moved to ensure the equipment is capable of performing the task safely.
  • Maintain equipment and facilities; including lubrication, minor repairs and clean-up that may require the use of hand tools, wrenches, gauges, shovels, brooms, compressed air, etc.
  • A willingness to pitch in to help in other areas as determined by management; team player.
  • Chainsaw operation.
  • Health and Safety Program participation, which includes following all related rules, policies and procedures.

Employment Requirements

All operators should meet the following qualifications;

  • High school education, or greater, is an asset.
  • Some positions will require the employee to have specific licenses and certifications in order to operate the piece of equipment.
  • Courses related to equipment operation would be considered an asset.
  • A good understanding of mobile equipment and related processes including maintenance of this equipment is valuable.
  • Mechanically inclined.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Punctuality, ability to work alone or as part of a group, good physical condition, safety conscious, and good problem solving skills are required.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory. Operators must supply, maintain and wear their own CSA approved steel toe work boots. Hearing protection, hard hats and safety glasses are supplied by the company.
  • Ability to take direction is required as on the job training is provided.

Physical Demands

In a typical 8.5 hour day operators can expect to;

  • To stand, walk and sit for extended periods of up to 3 hours at a time.
  • The job requires significant squatting, reaching, bending, twisting and climbing while working near other moving equipment.
  • Working in high pedestrian traffic areas; requires significant concentration.
  • Physical strains associated with rough terrain working conditions.
  • Exposure to dusty and noisy working conditions.
  • The job occasionally requires lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects ranging up to 50 lbs.
  • Chainsaw use and related noise, vibration and other health hazards.

Operators also routinely perform manual labour duties required to keep processes flowing through the planermill.

Operator’s Duties

An operator’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to;

  • Inspection, hazard assessment, start-up and operation of planermill equipment, its infeed and outfeed components and related conveyor systems.
  • Operation and full working knowledge of the control panels and automated systems controls for the equipment being operated.
  • Visually calculate size, condition, quality and other characteristics of incoming lumber to maximize its use in creating quality finished products.
  • Maintain equipment and facilities; including lubrication, clean-up, blade, knife and saw replacement that may require the use of hand tools, wrenches, gauges, shovels, brooms, compressed air, etc.
  • Chainsaw operation.
  • Health and Safety Program participation, which includes following all related rules, policies and procedures.

Employment Requirements

All operators should meet the following qualifications;

  • High school education, or greater, is an asset
  • Courses related to wood processing or forestry is an asset
  • A good understanding of planermill equipment and related processes including maintenance of this equipment is valuable.

  • Some positions may require several years of experience, usually within our own company.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.

 Labourer’s Duties

A general labourers responsibilities may include, but are not limited to;

  • Sort, stack and pile various rough lumber and finished lumber products.
  • Maintain facilities; including clean-up activities as directed by management.
  • Operation of some equipment; ex. sorting chains, once trained and deemed competent to do so by the line supervisor.
  • Strong customer service skills required for some positions.
  • Chainsaw operation once trained and deemed competent to do so by the line supervisor.
  • Health and Safety Program participation, which includes following all related rules, policies and procedures.

Employment Requirements

All general labourers should meet the following qualifications;

  • High school education, or greater, is an asset.
  • Prior experience dealing with building materials, wood processing and/or forestry considered a definite asset.
  • Physically fit and able to lift up to 50 lbs following safe lifting procedures.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Punctuality, ability to work alone or as part of a group, safety conscious, and good problem solving skills are required.
